Fire Safety Alert: Kids Playing with Fire in Creswell Sparks Blaze?

9/24/2024 (Permalink)

Curious boys light and play with stick matches. We restore fire damage “Like it never even happened” in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are leaders in fire damage restoration services in Creswell. Educating children about the dangers of fire is a critical step in preventing residential fire damage. Teach them that fire is a tool, not a toy, and should only be used under adult supervision. Explain the potential consequences of playing with matches, lighters, and other fire-starting tools.

Keep matches, lighters, and flammable materials out of reach and sight of children. Lock them in cabinets if necessary. Educate children about the importance of not touching or experimenting with these items. If your child exhibits a strong interest in fire, consider seeking guidance from a child psychologist or fire prevention specialist to address this behavior constructively.

Establish clear rules about fire safety and regularly review them with your children. Conduct fire drills at home so children understand what to do in a fire. Ensure they know how to call 911 and articulate their home address.

Create a family fire escape plan with at least two ways out of each room and a designated meeting spot outside. Practicing this plan can help ensure that everyone knows how to exit the house safely during a fire. Implementing these proactive measures can greatly minimize the risk of fire incidents resulting from children playing with fire.

Clothes Iron Catches Fire in Springfield Home?

9/17/2024 (Permalink)

A clothes iron sits on an ironing board. We are fire damage restoration leaders in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams want everyone to be safe from fire. A clothes iron can pose significant fire risks if not used or maintained properly. Here are some tips for using clothes irons safely:

Electrical Malfunctions

Clothes irons draw substantial power, and any electrical faults can lead to overheating and fires. Using a damaged iron or one with faulty wiring increases the risk. Always inspect the cord and plug for any signs of wear or damage before use, and replace the iron if necessary.

Overheating

Leaving a clothes iron on for extended periods can cause it to overheat. Modern irons typically have automatic shut-off features, but older models may not. Never leave it unattended while plugged in or in use.

Improper Storage

Storing a hot iron improperly can ignite nearby flammable materials such as clothing, towels, or paper. Always allow the iron to cool completely before storing it in a safe, non-flammable location.

Placement While In Use

Placing a hot iron on an unstable or flammable surface, such as an ironing board cover that’s not heat-resistant, can cause fires. Use the iron only on stable, heat-resistant surfaces, and always use an ironing board designed for such purposes.

Protect Your Home from Windstorm Damage: Best Trees and Foliage for Springfield, Oregon?

9/10/2024 (Permalink)

Windblown grass protects soil from erosion. We restore wind damage “Like it never even happened” in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams restore wind damage every year in Pleasant Hill. Windstorms can cause significant damage to homes, but strategic planting of trees and foliage can provide a natural barrier against these forces. Here are some examples:

Evergreen Trees: Evergreens like Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar are excellent for creating windbreaks. These trees retain their foliage year-round, providing continuous protection. Their dense canopies and sturdy trunks can significantly reduce wind speed and shield your property.

Deciduous Trees: Oregon White Oak and Bigleaf Maple offer structural solid integrity and deep root systems. While they lose leaves in the winter, their robust branches and trunks remain effective wind barriers.

Shrubs and Bushes: Planting dense shrubs, such as Pacific Wax Myrtle or Red Osier Dogwood, can offer additional layers of protection. These flexible bushes can absorb and dissipate wind energy, reducing its impact on larger structures.

Native Grasses and Ground Cover: Incorporate native grasses like Idaho Fescue and ground covers like Kinnikinnick to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion. These plants help anchor the soil, reducing the risk of uprooted trees during intense windstorms.

By strategically planting these trees and foliage around your home, you can create a resilient landscape that not only beautifies your property but also offers essential protection against windstorm damage.

Plumbing issues are a common threat. Aging pipes, faulty installations, or sudden pipe bursts can result in extensive water leakage. Also, roof leaks can allow water to infiltrate the building, damaging ceilings, walls, and inventory.

Natural disasters pose another major threat. Businesses in flood-prone areas must have robust flood defenses and emergency plans.

If they are not properly maintained, HVAC systems can cause water damage leading to mold growth and structural damage.

Finally, while essential for fire safety, sprinkler systems can accidentally discharge due to malfunction or false alarms, resulting in water damage.

Awareness and proactive management of these potential hazards are essential in preventing commercial water damage. Investing in routine inspections and maintenance can save businesses from significant financial losses and operational downtime.

8/20/2024 (Permalink)

Flames shoot up from a malfunctioning electric stove. We are highly trained and certified to restore fire damage in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams have been restoring fire damage for residents of Pleasant Hill for many years. Electric stovetops are common in modern kitchens, offering convenience and efficiency. However, like any electrical appliance, they can malfunction and pose a fire hazard if improperly maintained or used. One of the primary culprits is malfunctioning electric coils on stovetops.

To reduce the risk of stovetop fires, it's essential to inspect coils regularly for signs of wear or damage, such as discoloration or sparking during use. Stovetops should also be cleaned regularly to remove grease buildup, which can act as fuel in case of a fire. Additionally, never leave cooking unattended, especially when using high-heat settings.

Springfield Home Sustains Damage From A Falling Tree During a Windstorm?

8/13/2024 (Permalink)

A wind-damaged tree blocks a road. We are leaders in windstorm damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are leaders in storm damage mitigation and restoration services. Windstorms can cause significant property damage, particularly tree falls. Mature trees, while usually an asset to any property, can become hazardous in high winds. Trees can uproot or break limbs, which might crash into homes, vehicles, power lines, or other structures.

Homeowners can take preventive measures to minimize the risk of falling trees. This includes regular inspections by professional arborists who will assess the health and stability of trees on their property. Weak, diseased, or dead trees are more susceptible to wind damage and should be pruned or removed.

Additionally, consider the species of trees in your landscaping; some species are more resilient to wind than others. Planting wind-resistant trees and positioning them strategically can provide a natural windbreak without posing a hazard.

Taking these steps not only preserves the aesthetic and environmental benefits of having trees but also significantly mitigates the risk of property damage during a windstorm, protecting your investment and ensuring safety.

How Can I Prevent Dishwasher Malfunctions in My Springfield Home?

7/23/2024 (Permalink)

A person watches as the dishwasher malfunctions and floods the floor with soap suds. We are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are on call and ready to respond to water damage emergencies day and night. Dishwashers, while convenient, can be a source of significant water damage if they malfunction or are not properly maintained.

One common cause of dishwasher-related water damage is a faulty door seal. Over time, the seal can wear out, allowing water to leak out during a wash cycle. Regularly inspecting and replacing the seal, When necessary, inspecting and replacing the seal can prevent leaks and subsequent water damage.

Clogs in the dishwasher’s drainage system are another potential issue. Food particles and debris can accumulate in the drain hose or filter, causing water to back up and overflow. Cleaning the filter and ensuring the drain hose is clear can help prevent this problem. Running a cleaning cycle with vinegar can also help keep the drainage system free of buildup.

It’s also important to ensure that the dishwasher is properly installed. An improperly leveled dishwasher can cause water to pool and leak out. Additionally, checking the water supply line for cracks or loose connections can prevent leaks.

Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of malfunction can help homeowners avoid costly water damage caused by dishwashers. By being proactive and vigilant, you can enjoy the convenience of your dishwasher without the risk of water-related issues.

Runoff From Summer Rainstorm Floods Low-Lying Areas of Creswell?

6/18/2024 (Permalink)

Floodwaters crest the bank of a creek. We restore storm damage in Lane County 24 hours a day.

Our Springfield and East Lane County teams are trusted leaders in storm damage mitigation and restoration services in Creswell. Summer storms can cause flooding conditions in low-lying areas, and when drains are clogged. Here are some flood safety tips from the Lane County website.

During flooding, it's crucial to prioritize safety and preparation. First, an evacuation plan should be established with household members, including a meeting point outside the flood area and an escape route. Carry a portable disaster supply kit if evacuation is necessary. Keep a battery-powered radio for emergency updates.

If trapped in a building during rising waters, call 911 and move to a higher floor or roof with warm clothing, flashlight, phone, and radio. Avoid walking in floodwaters due to deceptive currents; use a stick to check the ground. Stay clear of power lines, as electrocution is a significant risk during floods.

Be ready to evacuate promptly, knowing your routes and higher ground locations. Never drive through flooded areas; abandon stalled vehicles and walk to safety following recommended routes. Before flooding, close the main gas valve and turn off utilities. Only touch electrical equipment in dry areas with proper insulation. A window is damaged during a powerful windstorm. We restore wind damage in Lane County “Like it never even happened.”

Our Springfield and East Lane County teams respond to storm damage emergencies every year in Lane County. In Springfield, windstorms can significantly threaten properties, causing various types of damage depending on the storm's severity.

One common form of damage is roof damage, where strong winds can lift shingles, tiles, or metal panels, leading to leaks and water damage inside the property. Windborne debris, such as loose objects, signs, or fencing, can become projectiles, causing impact damage to buildings and vehicles.

Power outages are also common during windstorms, as strong winds can bring down power lines and disrupt electrical infrastructure. This can affect the comfort and safety of occupants and lead to food spoilage, property damage from surges when power is restored, and potential security risks.

Creswell Homes Sustain Damage During Powerful Windstorm?

5/14/2024 (Permalink)

A wind-damaged tree has fallen onto an apartment building. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams restore wind damage every year in Creswell. The strength of wind required to damage a home can vary depending on several factors, including the construction materials, design of the structure, and duration of the wind event. Here are some guidelines on the wind speeds needed to cause damage to different types of homes:

Light Structural Damage: Sustained winds of 50-60 mph can cause minor damage, such as loose shingles, siding, or gutters. Weakly attached structures, such as carports or awnings, may also be damaged or torn off.

Moderate Structural Damage: Wind speeds of 60-80 mph can cause more significant damage to homes, including broken windows, roof damage, and structural deformation. Mobile homes and older structures are particularly vulnerable at these wind speeds.

Severe Structural Damage: Winds exceeding 80 mph can cause severe damage to homes, including partial or total roof failure, collapsed walls, and even destruction of poorly constructed buildings. Strong tornadoes or hurricanes with wind speeds exceeding 100 mph can also cause catastrophic damage to homes in their path.

It's important to note that wind gusts, which are brief increases in wind speed, can exert even more significant force on structures than sustained winds. For example, a severe thunderstorm may produce wind gusts well above 100 mph, causing considerable damage even to well-built homes.

Smoke Alarm Failure Averted by Routine Inspections in Cottage Grove Home?

4/23/2024 (Permalink)

A person tests a smoke alarm during a routine home inspection. We restore fire damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are highly trained and certified to restore fire-damaged properties in Cottage Grove. Regular testing, maintenance, and replacement of smoke alarms are essential to ensure their reliability and effectiveness in protecting occupants and property from fire hazards. Here are some examples of how smoke alarms can fail:

Dead Batteries: One of the most common reasons for smoke alarm failure is dead or missing batteries. Smoke alarms rely on batteries as a power source, and if the batteries are depleted or not installed correctly, the alarm may not function when needed.

Dust and Debris: Accumulating dust, dirt, or other debris on the smoke alarm's sensors can obstruct their ability to detect smoke particles effectively. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to ensure optimal performance.

Expired or Faulty Sensors: Over time, smoke alarm sensors may become less sensitive or malfunction due to age, wear and tear, or exposure to environmental factors. Smoke alarms should be replaced according to manufacturer recommendations or if they exhibit signs of sensor failure.

Power Interruptions: Smoke alarms connected to electrical power sources may fail during power outages or if the electrical circuit is disrupted. Backup battery power or interconnected alarm systems can mitigate this risk.

Could Building a Swale Prevent Runoff and Flooding in Cottage Grove?

4/9/2024 (Permalink)

A backyard is flooded after a heavy rain event. We restore water damage from rainstorms 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Cottage Grove residents rely on our local Springfield and East Lane County teams to restore water damage from heavy rains. One method of reducing runoff is to build swales into low-lying areas around the home.

Swales are shallow, vegetated channels designed to manage stormwater runoff effectively, mitigating flooding during heavy rain. These features work by slowing down the flow of rainwater, allowing it to infiltrate the soil and be absorbed by plants rather than rapidly running off the surface.

When heavy rain occurs, water naturally follows the path of least resistance, often resulting in runoff that can overwhelm drainage systems and cause flooding. Swales intercept this runoff, channeling it along a gentle gradient, which encourages infiltration and helps to distribute the water more evenly across the landscape. The vegetation within the swale further aids in absorption and filtration, as plant roots help to break up compacted soil and absorb excess water.

By slowing down the flow of water and promoting infiltration, swales reduce the volume and velocity of runoff reaching downstream areas, thereby minimizing the risk of flooding. Swales can also help trap sediment and pollutants, improving water quality as the filtered water percolates into the groundwater table.

Swales function as natural and sustainable stormwater management solutions, effectively reducing the impact of heavy rainfall events while also providing ecological benefits.

Could a Hidden Water Leak be the Cause of the Mold Outbreak in my Springfield Home?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A hidden water leak causes a mold outbreak. We restore mold damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are leaders in mold damage restoration services in Springfield. Mold outbreaks are encouraged by excess moisture in an environment, so a hidden water leak can be a primary cause of a mold outbreak in a home. Water leaks often go unnoticed for extended periods, allowing moisture to accumulate in hidden or inaccessible areas such as behind walls, under flooring, or ceilings.

As the leak persists, moisture saturates porous materials like drywall, wood, or insulation, promoting mold spore germination and colonization. Mold can then proliferate rapidly, spreading across surfaces and releasing spores into the air.

Additionally, the presence of mold may exacerbate the issue, as it can deteriorate building materials and compromise the structural integrity of the building. Addressing hidden water leaks promptly is essential to preventing mold outbreaks and mitigating associated risks.

Regular inspection and maintenance of plumbing systems, roofing, and building envelopes can help detect and address leaks early, minimizing the potential for mold growth. Prompt remediation of mold outbreaks is crucial to restore indoor air quality.

SERVPRO® Professionals Restore Soot Damage in Springfield Home?

3/12/2024 (Permalink)

A switch plate and wall are covered in soot. We are leaders in soot cleaning services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are highly trained and certified to clean and restore soot damage in homes and commercial businesses in Springfield. Soot is challenging to clean due to its unique composition, physical properties, and the surfaces it often adheres to. Soot is primarily composed of fine carbon particles that result from incomplete combustion of organic matter, such as wood, oil, or gas. Several factors contribute to its difficulty in cleaning:

Fine Particle Size: Soot particles are extremely small, often in the micron or submicron range. Their minuscule size allows them to penetrate porous materials deeply, making removing them entirely challenging.

Stickiness: Soot particles have an adhesive quality, causing them to adhere strongly to surfaces. This adhesive nature makes them resistant to cleaning methods like wiping or dusting.

Chemical Complexity: Soot is not just carbon; it can contain a mix of chemicals, including tar, oils, and various contaminants, depending on the source of the fire. These compounds can be difficult to dissolve or remove with standard cleaning agents.

Surface Variability: Soot can settle on various surfaces, including walls, ceilings, fabrics, and electronics. Each surface may require a different cleaning approach and specialized techniques to prevent damage during cleaning.

Broken Pipe Floods Cottage Grove Home Overnight?

2/27/2024 (Permalink)

Water from a broken pipe floods the floors of a house. We restore water damage in Lane County 24-hours a day.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams respond to water damage emergencies in Cottage Grove day and night. A broken pipe can cause overnight flooding through the sudden and uncontrolled release of water. When a pipe breaks due to freezing, corrosion, or excessive pressure, it creates an opening allowing pressurized water to escape. Here are some examples of how a broken pipe can flood a property overnight:

Water Pressure: Pipes in a house are typically under water pressure, ensuring a steady flow of water to faucets and appliances. A break in the pipe can result in a continuous release of water at high pressure.

Timing: A broken pipe may go unnoticed for several hours since most household activities decrease at night. It can occur when everyone is asleep, allowing water to accumulate without immediate detection.

Slow Leaks vs. Sudden Breaks: While some pipe leaks may be slow and gradual, a sudden pipe break can rapidly release a large volume of water, leading to quicker flooding.

Accumulation: As water flows out of the broken pipe, it accumulates in the affected area, saturating floors, walls, and possessions. Depending on the location of the break, it can flood rooms or even multiple areas of the house.

Structural Damage: Over time, the flooding can cause structural damage to building materials and may impact the stability of the affected area.

How Much Damage Can Frozen Pipes Do to My Springfield Home?

2/20/2024 (Permalink)

A closeup of a burst frozen pipe is shown. Lane County residents trust us to restore water damage 24 hours a day.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams restore water damage from frozen pipes often during the winter. Here are some examples of the damage frozen pipes can cause:

Burst Pipes: Frozen pipes' most immediate and severe consequence is their potential to burst. When water inside pipes freezes, it expands, creating intense pressure. This pressure can lead to cracks or ruptures in the pipes, resulting in water leaks once the ice thaws.

Water Damage: Burst pipes can release substantial water into your home. This water can saturate walls, ceilings, floors, and possessions, causing severe structural damage and potentially ruining belongings.

Mold Growth: Moisture from water leaks provides an ideal environment for mold growth. Mold can develop rapidly on damp surfaces, leading to health hazards and the need for costly mold remediation.

Structural Weakening: Prolonged exposure to water from burst pipes can weaken structural elements such as drywall, insulation, and wooden supports. This can compromise the integrity of the building.

Electrical Damage: Water damage can affect electrical systems and appliances in the home, leading to electrical hazards, short circuits, and costly repairs or replacements.

High Repair Costs: Restoring a home after frozen pipe damage can be expensive. Repairs may involve fixing burst pipes, replacing damaged materials, and addressing secondary issues like mold or electrical problems.

Hidden Water Leak Causes Mold Outbreak in Pleasant Hill Business?

2/13/2024 (Permalink)

A hidden water leak and mold growth are revealed on a water-stained ceiling. Commercial businesses trust us to restore property damage in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams are trained and certified to restore mold damage in commercial properties and homes in Pleasant Hill. When water escapes from pipes, appliances, or other sources within the walls, floors, or ceilings, it often remains undetected for an extended period. During this time, the moisture saturates building materials, providing the necessary environment for mold spores to thrive. Here's how it happens:

Excess Moisture: The hidden leak continuously releases moisture into the surrounding areas, increasing the humidity levels. Mold requires moisture to grow, and the constant water supply from the leak promotes mold development.

Dark and Enclosed Spaces: Hidden leaks are often located in areas with limited ventilation and low light, such as within walls or under flooring. These dark, enclosed spaces offer a conducive environment for mold spores to multiply without disturbance.

Time: Undetected leaks can persist for weeks or even months. Mold spores present in the air and on surfaces have ample time to settle on moist materials and begin growing into visible colonies.

Nutrient Source: Building materials like drywall, insulation, and wood provide organic matter that mold can feed on. As the mold consumes these materials, it continues to spread and thrive.

Smoke Detector Safety Tips for Springfield Residents?

2/6/2024 (Permalink)

A fire detector needed a new battery We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Smoke detectors serve a vital role in safeguarding households from the dangers of fire. Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams offer these smoke detector safety tips for the Springfield community:

Monthly Check-ups

It is advisable to conduct a monthly test of your smoke detectors. Most detectors feature a test button that you can press to verify their functionality. Always adhere to the manufacturer's instructions when performing these tests.

Annual Battery Replacement

Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors at least once a year, even if they still seem functional. Many individuals find it convenient to synchronize this with daylight saving time changes as a helpful reminder.

Detector Replacement

Smoke detectors have a finite lifespan, typically around ten years for ionization detectors and 7-10 years for photoelectric detectors. Consult the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific model. If your smoke detectors exceed their suggested lifespan, it's advisable to replace them promptly.

Regular Visual Assessments

In addition to monthly testing and battery changes, conduct visual inspections of your smoke detectors regularly. Ensure they remain free from dust, cobwebs, or any other obstructions that might impair their performance. Clean them as necessary.

Interconnected Detector Maintenance

If your residence has interconnected smoke detectors (where the activation of one will trigger all), ensure that each unit is functioning correctly. A malfunction in one detector could compromise the entire system's effectiveness.

Mineral Deposits Lead to Broken Pipes in Springfield Homes?

1/23/2024 (Permalink)

Mineral deposits clog a shower head. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams respond to water damage emergencies throughout the year in Lane County. Like many other areas, Springfield can have issues with hard water, but the severity of the problem can vary depending on the specific location within the city. Hard water is typically caused by a high mineral content in the local water supply, such as calcium and magnesium. These minerals can accumulate in pipes and appliances over time, potentially leading to plumbing issues and reduced appliance efficiency.

To determine the extent of the hard water problem, you can check the city's water quality reports or contact the local water utility. Water quality can vary from one area to another within the same city, so it's a good idea to inquire about the specific region or neighborhood where you reside or plan to live. If hard water is a concern, you may consider installing a water softener or using other water treatment methods to reduce its impact on your plumbing and appliances.

Cottage Grove Home Sustains Water Intrusion Damage from Heavy Rain?

1/16/2024 (Permalink)

Rain backs up out of a clogged storm drain. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams respond to storm damage emergencies throughout the year in Lane County. Cottage Grove residents know they can rely on us to respond quickly and perform all phases of a water damage restoration, from the initial cleanup phase to the final phases of rebuilding required to restore a property to pre-damage conditions.

Clogged storm drains can lead to water intrusion in low-lying areas by preventing efficient runoff of rainwater. When debris, leaves, or sediment block storm drains, rainwater accumulates on streets and sidewalks. In low-lying regions, this pooled water can rise to levels exceeding home entry points' threshold like basements or crawl spaces. This can result in water seeping into homes, causing flooding and property damage. Properly functioning storm drains direct rainwater away from residential areas, reducing the risk of water intrusion. Regular maintenance and clearing of storm drains are essential to mitigate the threat of flooding in low-lying neighborhoods.

Springfield Residents Protect Their Homes from Ice Dam Damage?

1/3/2024 (Permalink)

A person uses a roof rake to remove ice dams and snow. We are a leading choice for water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County team restores water damage throughout the year.

Preventing ice dams from forming on your roof is essential to protect your home from potential water damage and structural issues during the winter months. Here are three relatively easy ways to prevent ice dams:

Proper insulation: Ensure your attic is adequately insulated. Proper insulation helps maintain a consistent temperature in the attic, preventing warm air from escaping and heating the roof, which can lead to snowmelt. Insulation should be evenly distributed and cover areas like the attic floor and walls. Adequate insulation reduces the temperature differential between the attic and the roof, minimizing the conditions that contribute to ice dam formation.

Adequate ventilation: Ensure your attic has proper ventilation. Good attic ventilation allows cold air to circulate, maintaining a cooler attic temperature. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and attic fans can help achieve this. Adequate ventilation helps prevent the buildup of warm air that can melt snow on the roof, contributing to ice dams.

Roof maintenance: Keep your roof clear of snow and ice. After snowfall, use a roof rake with a long handle to safely remove snow from the lower portion of the roof. This helps prevent excessive snow buildup and the formation of ice dams. Clearing snow from gutters and downspouts is also essential to allow proper drainage.

By implementing these measures, homeowners can reduce the risk of ice dams forming on their roofs, thereby protecting their homes from potential damage during cold winter weather.

Clogged Rain Gutters Cause Water Damage to Home in Creswell?

12/19/2023 (Permalink)

Water pours out of clogged rain gutters during a heavy downpour. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County team responds to storm damage emergencies in Creswell throughout the year. Here are some ways water can enter your home if your rain gutters are clogged:

Roof Damage: When gutters become clogged with leaves, debris, or even ice during the winter, water can back up and pool on the roof. This excess water can seep under roofing materials, causing roof leaks and damage. Over time, this can lead to rotting wood, damaged shingles, and compromised roof integrity.

Fascia and Soffit Damage: The fascia and soffit are the wooden or metal components that form the edge of your roof and provide structural support. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow, damaging these areas. Water infiltration can lead to rot, mold growth, and structural weakening.

Crawl Space Flooding: If water is not properly directed away from your home due to clogged gutters, it can pool near the foundation. Crawl spaces are vulnerable to moisture issues when gutters are not functioning correctly.

Mold and Mildew Growth: Excess moisture caused by clogged gutters can create favorable conditions for mold and mildew growth. These microorganisms thrive in damp environments and can proliferate on exterior and interior surfaces, leading to property damage.

Exterior Wall Damage: Over time, water runoff from clogged gutters can stain and damage the exterior walls of your home. This can affect the appearance and integrity of siding and paint.

Heavy Rainstorm Reveals Water Leak in Attic in Springfield Home?

12/12/2023 (Permalink)

People use buckets to catch rain leaking from their attic during a rainstorm. We are a top choice for storm damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams respond to storm damage emergencies often during winter storms. As soon as we arrive, we will mitigate by tarping and boarding any damaged areas allowing water to enter the structure, and contact your insurance company within eight hours.

Discovering water entering your attic from a leaking roof during a rainstorm can be concerning, but there are steps you can take to mitigate the damage and address the issue until professional help arrives. Here's what to do:

Safety First

Ensure your safety by avoiding any electrical hazards. Do not touch electrical wires or devices that may be in contact with the water.

Turn Off Electricity

If water is entering your attic and you have electrical wiring or fixtures in the affected area, turn off the electricity to that part of your home to prevent electrical hazards.

Contain the Water

Place buckets, containers, or towels under the areas where water is dripping or pooling to prevent further damage to your belongings or the structure of your home.

Remove Valuables

If there are any valuable items or sensitive documents stored in the attic, try to move them to a dry and safe location to prevent water damage.

Document the Damage

Take photos or videos of the leaking and any damage it's causing. These may be useful for insurance claims or when working with a roofing contractor.

Temporary Patch or Containment

If you can safely access the roof during the rainstorm, consider using a tarp, plastic sheeting, or roofing cement to create a temporary patch over the leaking area. This can help divert the water away from your attic. Use caution and ensure you have proper safety equipment if you attempt this.

Contact Your Insurance Company

If you have homeowner's insurance, contact your insurance company to report the damage and discuss the process for filing a claim. Provide them with the documentation you collected.

Prevent Future Leaks

Once the immediate issue is resolved, consider regular roof maintenance to prevent future leaks. Inspect your roof regularly, clean gutters, and address any issues promptly.

Space Heater Safety Guidelines for Commercial Properties in Springfield?

11/27/2023 (Permalink)

A space heater warms an office in a commercial property. We respond to commercial property damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams understand the importance of getting your business operational again after sustaining fire damage. During the cold winter months, some people like to use space heaters to take the chill out of a cold office. Traveler’s Insurance offers the following guidelines for employers that do not have a formal space heater policy:

  • Use of space heaters should not be allowed unless supervisor or management approval is provided before use.
  • Units that have been listed or labeled by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), or ETL (Intertek) should be the only space heaters permitted for use.
  • Keep at least 36 inches of clearance around every space heater and only use them in areas free of flammable liquids and easily ignited or combustible materials.
  • Proper placement of the space heater is important. Be sure it is not in a high-traffic area or where it may become a tripping hazard.
  • If using an electric space heater, ensure electrical cords and plugs are not frayed or damaged. Always plug the heater directly into the wall outlet and be sure the power cord is not crossing a walkway. Never use extension cords or power strips, as these could overheat and lead to a fire.
  • Be sure space heaters are never left unattended. They should be turned off when the employee leaves the room or area of the heater and unplugged at the end of the day.

Storms Cause Water Intrusion Issues in Pleasant Hill Homes?

11/20/2023 (Permalink)

A person wades through standing water in a backyard. We are trusted leaders in storm damage restoration services in Lane County. Photo by Vidar Nordli-Mathisen on Unsplash

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams have the advanced training, specialized equipment, and years of experience required to restore water intrusion damage quickly and efficiently in Pleasant Hill. Landscapes that do not drain away from a home or commercial property can cause water to pool around the base of the structure, allowing water to penetrate cracks and loose seals, causing water damage. Ensuring the water drains away from your foundation is critical to resolving these issues. Here are some general guidelines from the Oregon Landscape Contractors Association:

Degree of Slope

The degree of slope or the grading around the foundation of a structure to prevent water intrusion issues depends on various factors, including the climate, soil type, local building codes, and the specific design of the building.

Oregon landscape guidelines set the base to a minimum slope of 2 percent cross slope for positive drainage. This helps to ensure that water does not accumulate around the base of the structure. These codes are based on local climate and geological conditions.

Also, consider the local rainfall patterns and the capacity of your drainage system (e.g., gutters, downspouts, and French drains). Properly designed drainage systems can complement the grading to ensure water is directed away from the foundation.

Frozen Pipes Cause Water Damage in Springfield Home?

11/7/2023 (Permalink)

A frozen copper pipe has burst. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County professionals respond to water damage emergencies throughout the year in Springfield. Pipe failure can lead to water damage, leaks, and potentially costly repairs. One of the most common forms of pipe failure in a home is frozen pipes.

In the Pacific Northwest frozen pipes are a common problem. When water inside a pipe freezes, it expands and can exert significant pressure on the pipe's walls. This pressure can lead to cracks, fractures, or even bursting of the pipe. Once the frozen water thaws, it can cause water to leak into the home. To prevent freezing pipes, homeowners often insulate their plumbing in vulnerable areas, like basements and crawl spaces, and take measures to keep pipes warm during winter.

Cottage Grove businesses can rely on our fast emergency response time and highly trained teams to restore fire damage quickly and efficiently, with minimal disruption to employees and customers.

Toaster fire?

Recently, while an employee was taking a break and making toast in the office breakroom, the toaster’s heating coils overheated and ignited a small fire inside. The fire started as a small glow, unnoticed in the room’s bright fluorescent lighting. Within minutes flames engulfed the interior of the toaster, and the toaster started emitting bilious clouds of smoke. Soon the paper towel caught fire and the smoke alarm sounded. Fire extinguishers were used to contain the fire, but the damage was done. One wall was covered in smoke and soot and the entire building smelled of smoke and burnt toast!

Our office manager called the Springfield and East Lane County team and they arrived quickly and immediately began the cleanup and restoration process. They cleaned the entire breakroom, replaced the damaged wall, and repainted. They set up smoke odor removal equipment in the building, and now you would never know we had a fire in our breakroom or that once our offices smelled like burnt toast! Thank you!

Water Damage Caused by Leaking Air Conditioner in Springfield Home?

8/29/2023 (Permalink)

A large water stain is spreading on a ceiling. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County team respond to water damage emergencies every year in Springfield and during the summer months, some water damage is caused by leaking air conditioning units. According to the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety (IBHS), some of the causes of air conditioner-related water damage are:

Frozen Evaporator Coils: Air conditioners rely on a refrigeration cycle to cool the air. If the evaporator coils become dirty, airflow is restricted, or there is a refrigerant issue, the coils can freeze. When the unit is turned off, the frozen coils can melt and produce excessive water that the drainage system may not be able to handle, resulting in water leakage and potential water damage.

Ductwork Leaks: In some cases, the ductwork connected to the air conditioner can develop leaks. When cool air passes through these leaks, condensation can form on the surface of the ducts. Over time, this can lead to water accumulation and potential water damage to the surrounding building materials.

Is Your Home Prepared for Wildfire Season in Springfield?

7/18/2023 (Permalink)

Wildfire smoke spreads over parts of northern California and Oregon. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County teams want everyone to be prepared before a wildfire threatens your property. Here are some tips to protect your homes and businesses from wildfire damage from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Clear leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves, porches, and decks. This prevents embers from igniting your home.
  • Remove dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch and within 10 feet of the house
  • Screen or box-in areas below patios and decks with wire mesh to prevent debris and combustible materials from accumulating
  • Remove flammable materials (firewood stacks, propane tanks) within 30 feet of your home’s foundation and outbuildings, including garages and sheds. If it can catch fire, don’t let it touch your house, deck or porch.
  • Wildfire can spread to tree tops. Prune trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground
  • Keep your lawn hydrated and maintained. If it is brown, cut it down to reduce fire intensity. Dry grass and shrubs are fuel for wildfire
  • Don’t let debris and lawn cuttings linger. Dispose of these items quickly to reduce fuel for fire
  • Inspect shingles or roof tiles. Replace or repair those that are loose or missing to prevent ember penetration
  • Cover exterior attic vents with metal wire mesh no larger than 1/8 inch to prevent sparks from entering the home
  • Enclose under-eave and soffit vents or screens with metal mesh to prevent ember entry

Floodwaters Carry Harmful Bacteria in Springfield?

6/20/2023 (Permalink)

Heavy rains cause street flooding. We restore storm damage “Like it never even happened” in Lane County.

The City of Eugene cautions residents to be aware of flooding risk that continues to be a risk to the community. In 1996, Springfield and other communities downstream of Eugene sustained heavier flooding due to uneven rainfall. Our local Springfield and East Lane County respond to flooding and other storm damage emergencies every year in the Springfield area.

The National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges people to be aware of the environmental health risks that floodwaters bring. After a flooding event occurs, the CDC warns of the dangers of consuming contaminated water. Flooding and runoff introduce dangerous chemicals, raw sewage, and other bacterial contaminants into the water, making it unsafe to drink, wash dishes, brush teeth, or prepare food.

The CDC also suggests removing and throwing out drywall and insulation that was contaminated with floodwater or sewage, and throwing out items that cannot be washed and cleaned with a bleach solution, such as mattresses, pillows, carpeting, carpet padding, and stuffed toys.

Turn Around Don’t Drown!

If you are driving, don’t drive in or through areas of standing water – even a few inches of water can cause cars and other vehicles to be swept away or stall from exposure.

Thunderstorm Safety Tips for Cottage Grove?

6/6/2023 (Permalink)

Thunderclouds fill the sky. We restore storm damage throughout the year in Lane County.

Thunderstorms are common during the summer months in Oregon. Our local Springfield and East Lane County team restores storm damage for Cottage Grove residents 365 days a year. Here are some thunderstorm and lightning safety tips from the Oregon State website:

Here are a few tips to help keep you safe the next time a thunderstorm comes through your area:

  • All thunderstorms produce lightning, sometimes striking as far away as 10 to 15 miles from any rainfall. This type of lightning is sometimes called ‘Bolts from the Blue’.
  • If you can hear thunder then you can be struck by lightning. If you hear thunder, it is time to go to a safe area!
  • If outdoors – Avoid water, high ground, open spaces, and standing under, or next to, trees or buildings. Stay away from all metal objects such as fences, electric wires, or machinery. In other words, seek a substantial structure or a vehicle for your protection. If caught outside with no place to go then as a last resort – Crouch down, put your feet together, tuck your head low, and cover your ears. Stay at least 15 feet away from other people or metal objects.
  • If indoors – Avoid water, and stay away from doors and windows. Do not use a telephone, especially a cord-connected one. Unplug and stay away from appliances, computers, and television sets.

Petcock Valve Failure Causes Catastrophic Flooding in Cottage Grove Home?

4/25/2023 (Permalink)

A water shut-off valve is shown. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our team in Springfield and East Lane County responds to water damage emergencies in Cottage Grove every year. Petcock valves are small shut-off valves used to control the flow of liquid or gas. When they fail, they can cause catastrophic water damage very quickly.

It is a good idea for everyone in the household to know where the main water shut-off valve is located and how to turn it off in case of a water damage event. Here is some information on locating and shutting off the main water shut-off valve:

Start by locating the main shut-off valve. The main cut-off valves are usually outdoors in warmer climates, and in colder climates, these valves are usually indoors. The water shut-off valves have either round wheel or lever handles.

It is important to note that if a valve is difficult to turn – DO NOT force it. Call a licensed plumber or the local public works authority for assistance.

  • Round wheel handle valves will turn off by turning the handle to the right (clockwise). A few turns should stop the wheel.
  • Handle valves should slowly be turned clockwise ¼ turn. The handle should no longer be parallel to the pipe. It should stop at a ¼ turn.

Powerful Winds Damage Properties in Pleasant Hill?

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

A tree has fallen over during a windstorm. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Windstorms are a common occurrence in the Pacific Northwest. Our team in Springfield and East Lane County is trained and certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification to restore storm damage. Pleasant Hill residents and businesses rely on our fast emergency response time and highly trained professionals to restore storm damage quickly and efficiently.

Here are some tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for preventing wind damage:

Trim or Remove Dead, Damaged, or Rotting Trees and Limbs

High winds can cause trees and branches to fall. Make sure any damaged trees on the property are trimmed or removed regularly. Your home should be at least a full-grown tree’s height away from the base of any tree, usually about 40 feet away.

Fortify Your Roof

Your roof is your first line of defense in a high-wind event. Re-adhere any loose shingles and consider impact-resistant shingles when installing a roof. Install roof strappings to anchor the roof framing to the wall framings so the wind can’t lift your roof off your house.

Secure Objects Outside the Home

Loose shingles, your dog’s house, trash cans, and sports equipment can be picked up by the wind and cause damage to your home. Secure outdoor objects like furniture, gutters, and downspouts.

  • Underground utility lines break
  • Bulging ground appears at the base of a slope
  • Water breaks through the ground surface in new locations
  • Fences, retaining walls, utility poles, or trees tilt or move
  • A faint rumbling sound that increases in volume is noticeable as the landslide nears
  • The ground slopes downward in one direction and may begin shifting in that direction under your feet
  • Unusual sounds, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together, might indicate moving debris
  • Collapsed pavement, mud, fallen rocks, and other indications of a possible debris flow can be seen when driving (embankments along roadsides are particularly susceptible to landslides)

What Process is Used to Restore Mold Damage in Creswell?

2/7/2023 (Permalink)

Mold grows around a leaking window. We are leaders in mold damage restoration in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County technicians follow a comprehensive, seven-step process when restoring mold damage in Creswell as follows:

  1. Emergency Contact

We’ll ask you questions to determine the necessary equipment and resources.

  1. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment

We follow local and state laws regarding inspection and documentation based on your unique situation.

  1. Mold Containment

We may use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

  1. Air Filtration

We utilize powerful “air scrubbers” and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in process.

  1. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

We use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

  1. Cleaning Contents

We clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold. We also remove odors and deodorization using fogging equipment.

  1. Restoration

Drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have been removed during the remediation process. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet, or it may require the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Are Your Pipes Protected From Freezing in Pleasant Hill?

1/31/2023 (Permalink)

A trickling faucet is shown in a bathroom. We are leaders in water damage restoration in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County technicians respond to many water damage emergencies involving burst pipes during the winter. Here are some tips for preventing frozen and thawing pipes from the Red Cross:

  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will start to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of the pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or another open flame device.
  • Apply heat until the full water pressure is restored. If you cannot locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

Severe Winds Damage Cresswell Home?

1/10/2023 (Permalink)

Blue sky can be seen through a storm-damaged roof. We restore storm damage throughout the year in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County team responds to storm damage emergencies in Cresswell 24 hours a day. Flying debris from severe winds can become flying projectiles that can cause significant damage to homes and buildings. Although the house in this picture shows obvious signs of storm damage, other damage may not be as apparent.

Visible Signs of Storm Damage From the Ground

  1. Collection of shingle granules – If you see an abundance of asphalt granules in your yard and landscaping, your roof has storm damage.
  2. Clogged Gutters – Leaking and clogged gutters often indicate roof storm damage. Unrepaired damage can cause your roof to leak and may cause foundation damage if the water is not draining away from the structure.
  3. Property damage – If your vehicles and property show signs of damage, your roof may have storm damage, too.
  4. Broken, cracked, and missing shingles – Check for missing and damaged ones, including curled, cracked, or torn ones. Wood shingles can show signs of splitting, curling, or decay, and low-slope roofs can have cracks, tears, wrinkles, and blisters.

Fire Safety Tips for Elderly Populations in Cottage Grove?

1/3/2023 (Permalink)

An elderly couple is sleeping peacefully. We are leaders in fire damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County team responds to fire damage emergencies in Cottage Grove every year. To increase fire safety for older adults, the National Fire Protection Association offers the following guidelines:

  • Keep it low
If you don't live in an apartment building, consider sleeping in a room on the ground floor to make emergency escape easier. Ensure smoke alarms are installed in every sleeping room and outside any sleeping area. Have a telephone installed where you sleep in case of emergency.
  • Sound the alarm
Most fatal fires occur when people are sleeping, and because smoke can put you into a deeper sleep rather than waking you, it's important to have a mechanical early warning of a fire to ensure you wake up. If anyone in your household is deaf or if your hearing is diminished, consider installing a smoke alarm that uses a flashing light or vibration to alert you to a fire emergency.
  • Do the drill
Regular fire drills help you know what to do in a home fire. If you or someone you live with cannot escape alone, designate a household member to assist and decide on backups in case the designee isn't home.
  • Open up
Make sure you can open all doors and windows in your home. Check to be sure that windows haven't been sealed shut with paint or nailed shut; if they have, arrange for someone to break the seals around your home or remove the nails.

How Can I Prevent My Pipes From Freezing in Pleasant Hill?

12/20/2022 (Permalink)

A frozen pipe is shown. We restore commercial property damage 24-hours a day in Lane County.

The coldest month of the year in Pleasant Hill is December, with an average low of 36 degrees Fahrenheit and a high of 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Our teams in Springfield and East Lane County offer this helpful information from the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety for preventing commercial pipes from freezing this winter:

  • Inspect and seal or repair all cracks, holes, leaks, windows, doors, and other openings on exterior walls with caulk or insulation to prevent cold air from penetrating the wall cavity
  • Insulate and seal around attic penetrations such as partition walls, vents, plumbing stacks, and electric and mechanical chases
  • Ensure your pipes in hard-to-reach places like attics, crawl spaces, and outside walls are insulated—wrap pipes and faucets in unheated or minimally heated areas of the building
  • Make sure your existing freeze-protection devices and alarms are in good working order. Test freeze stats (low-temperature sensing device) and valves before the weather gets cold.
  • Pipes leading to the exterior should be shut off and drained at the start of winter. If these exterior faucets do not have a shut-off valve inside the building, have one installed by a plumber.
  • Hire a licensed fire protection specialist to conduct routine maintenance on your sprinkler system. Discuss the system’s exposure to winter weather and potential mitigation options.

How Do I Know What Kind of Fire Extinguisher to Purchase in Pleasant Hill?

11/8/2022 (Permalink)

A group of fire extinguishers is seen. We are leaders in fire damage restoration services in Lane County.

Portable fire extinguishers can save lives and minimize fire damage when used correctly, but do you know how to select the best model for your home in Pleasant Hill? Here are some tips for purchasing a fire extinguisher for home use from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • For the home, choose a multi-purpose extinguisher (that can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the fire extinguisher instructions and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher training.
  • Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.
  • Know when to go. Fire extinguishers are one element of a fire response plan, but the primary element is safe escape. Every household should have ahome fire escape plan and working smoke alarms.

Sixteen-thousand trees were blown down in Portland alone, and miles of power lines also came down.

“Hurricane winds shrieked in from the Pacific and knocked all of Western Oregon to its knees,” The Oregonian wrote. Streets in Portland and cities and towns across the Northwest were left covered with “broken trees, fallen signs, shattered glass, and tangled power lines.”

The storm was quickly labeled the “worst weather disaster in Oregon’s history.”

Halloween Fire Safety Tips for Cottage Grove?

10/3/2022 (Permalink)

Trick-or-treaters are getting candy from a neighbor. We are leaders in fire damage restoration in Lane County!

Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams wish everyone in Cottage Grove a happy, fire-free Halloween. The National Fire Protection Association offers these Halloween Safety Tips to keep you and your trick-or-treaters safe from fire:

  • When choosing a costume, stay away from long trailing fabric
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways, and yards.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes
  • Make sure all smoke alarms in the home are working
  • Tell children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them. Be sure they know how to stop, drop and roll if their clothing catches fire.

A person is holding their nose to avoid smelling an offensive odor. We are leaders in commercial odor removal services in Lane County.

Creswell businesses can rest assured that our Springfield and East Lane County teams will be there when you need to resolve an odor issue. Nothing is more off-putting to customers and employees than a malodorous scent wafting through the business!

Odor identification and removal can be challenging as odors may derive from many sources inside and outside the premises. Our technicians are trained and certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to identify and eliminate offensive odors. We never mask odors or take shortcuts as these methods do not work.

Odor Identification

The first step is to identify the source of the smell and locate where the odor is contacting surfaces. Sometimes the odors originate from more than one location in the building.

Odor Elimination Process

Once we identify the cause of the odor and determine the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. Our technicians use several odor removal products capable of thoroughly penetrating surfaces to neutralize unpleasant scents.

Creswell Residents Need to Know!

Do you know that most home fires start in the kitchen? Knowing how to operate a fire extinguisher can save lives. Our Springfield and East Lane County teams offer these helpful tips from the National Fire Protection Association for the safe use of a home fire extinguisher:

    • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire
    • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
    • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle

Wind Blown Embers Cause Fire Damage in Cottage Grove?

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

A turbine vent is shown on the roof of a home. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County teams have the training, equipment, and experience to restore fire damage in Cottage Grove “Like it never even happened.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), windblown embers can travel up to five miles ahead of a burning fire. Here are some tips from the NFPA for preventing windblown embers from entering attics and crawl spaces through vents:

Inlet Vents

Gable end vents and other vent openings are vulnerable to windblown embers when the face of the vent is perpendicular to the wind flow, while embers are less likely to pass through vents with a face that is parallel to the wind flow. Therefore, soffited eave construction is preferred to open eave.

Outlet Vents

Opt for a ridge that is rated to resist wind-driven rain. These vents have an external baffle at the vent inlet.

Turbine Vents

Turbine vents also help keep embers out, but you should attach a piece of 1/8 inch mesh to the bottom of the roof sheathing at the opening for the vent.

A close-up of a fire extinguisher is shown sitting in front of an outdoor barbeque. We are on call 24-hours a day to respond to fire damage emergencies in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County have been restoring fire damage for residents in Pleasant Hill for many years. Owning a fire extinguisher and knowing how to operate it can minimize fire damage and save lives in many cases. The National Fire Protection Association offers these tips for selecting and using a fire extinguisher:

  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher trainings.
  • Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, leave immediately.

Electrical Fire in Creswell Business Causes Smoke Damage?

6/27/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke fills a room. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Lane County.

Our Springfield and East Lane County team pretests every item before cleaning to ensure we are using the most effective method. Our technicians have years of experience restoring smoke damage in Creswell and may use any of the following equipment to restore smoke damage:

Air Scrubber or Filter

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning system (HVAC) air scrubber, or a high-efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) air purifier can capture larger smoke molecules. There will still be some residual odor from smaller molecules or surface residues.

Ozone Generator

An ozone generator is a fast and highly effective smoke odor restoration method. These machines emit ozone, which follows the same paths through the air as smoke and oxidizes any residual traces in the air or on surfaces.

Thermal Fogging

Thermal fogging is an intensive treatment involving fogging machines. After residents evacuate, smoke cleaning professionals fill a structure with petroleum distillates that neutralize odors and ventilate the area.

Hydroxyl Generator

This is a slower and gentler alternative to ozone. These machines rely on ultraviolet light to generate hydroxyl radicals that eliminate smoke odors. It will take about three to five days of continuous operation to achieve the same results as a single ozone treatment.

Vapor Modification

Vapor modification is another odor elimination method that relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize smoke odor

6/21/2022 (Permalink)

Cumulonimbus thunderclouds fill the sky. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Lane County.

Thunderstorms can happen any time of the year in Cottage Grove when the right atmospheric conditions present themselves. Our Springfield and East Lane County team offers this information about thunderstorm alerts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

A thunderstorm watch is issued when severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. It does not mean they will occur; it only means they are possible.

A thunderstorm warning is issued when severe thunderstorms are occurring or are imminent in the warning area.

Severe thunderstorms are defined as follows:

  1. Winds of 58 miles per hour or higher
  2. Hail one inch in diameter or larger

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers these tips for preparing for a thunderstorm:

  • Know your area’s risk of thunderstorms. They can occur year-round and at any hour.
  • Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
  • Identify sturdy buildings close to where you live, work, study, and play

A crawl space under a home is shown. We inspect crawl space and attics in Lane County.

A family in the Pacific Northwest complained about hearing snoring sounds all winter long. Then winter ended, and the mystery was solved. Our Springfield and East Lane County teams have the training, equipment, and experience to perform crawl space inspections. During these inspections, our technicians look for signs of water damage, signs of mold and mildew, foundation issues, electrical issues, plumbing leaks and problems, ventilation problems, and floor damage.

Routine inspections of homes after storms or water or fire damage will identify any issues (but hopefully, no bears hibernating). The past few decades have seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. How Can I Tell If I Have Hidden Water Damage in My Cottage Grove Home?

4/13/2022 (Permalink)

A person uses an infrared camera to locate hidden water damage. We use advanced technology to detect hidden water damage and leaks in Lane County.

If your water bill seems unusually high, it may be an indication of a hidden water leak and water damage. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that small water leaks account for more than one trillion gallons of water wasted in United States homes each year! Our local teams in Springfield and East Lane County use advanced technology and techniques to locate the source of hidden water leaks in Cottage Grove.

The EPA offers this helpful leak detection information:

  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. It’s likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. You have a leak if the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing.
